ARTIST
Awangzhaba
Khampa painter · Born in Chamdo, Tibet, in 1964
Awangzhaba graduated from the College of Art at Tibet University in 1985 and joined the Tibet Artists Association in 1990. His practice is rooted in Khampa life and culture, with portraiture at its centre.
After years of experimentation, natural pigments became integral to his work from 2005. He draws on minerals such as cinnabar and azurite, alongside materials derived from plants used in traditional Tibetan medicine.
His layered portraits connect the outward appearance of a face with inner life, memory and spiritual experience.
